Streaky shooting leads to demise on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, NY – After a back-and-forth game tonight, Union eventually fell to Clarkson 85-90.

Union slides to third place in the Liberty League standings with a 9-6 conference record and a 14-8 overall record. Union led the Golden Knights early on, but lost the lead, and eventually fought back to get the game within two. However, Clarkson's shots in the fourth quarter fell and Union's did not.

Early in the first half, Clarkson hit a couple of threes that gave Union an early deficit. Bu,t senior guard Kevin Weckworth sprinted down the floor to drop a layup in the basket despite a foul. Weckworth hit the following foul shot to tie the game at nine after four minutes of play. Union later gained the lead following two more free throws from Weckworth.

Weckworth continued to star during the first quarter, hitting a three-pointer from deep behind the arc that pushed Union over the 20-point mark after six minutes of play. He then help push Union's lead to double digits when he hit another three, after pulling a step-back move that sent a Clarkson defender sliding, as Union had a 25-15 lead at the 12:30 mark in the first quarter.

Clarkson eventually cut Union's lead to one point with six minutes remaining in the half. Freshman forward Temidire George brought the lead back up to three after hooking the ball around the underside of the rim for a layup that gave Union a 34-31 lead, with less than five minutes left in the half. After another Weckworth three-pointer, Union ended the half up on Clarkson by a score of 47-41. Weckworth led Union in points in the first half, average points per minute, and three-point percentage.

Junior Brendan Laing was a big contributor to Union's first half lead as well. The center led Union in rebounds in the first half, and he was second to only Weckworth in points.

Clarkson chopped Union's lead in half quickly to start the second half, but Kevin McNoble brought Union's lead back up to six by hitting a layup with contact and hitting the ensuing foul shot three minutes into the second half. Union lost the lead, as they found themselves down 56-63 at the 10-minute mark in the final half of play.

The Dutchmen repeatedly fought back to get the game within two points later in the final quarter, and a Laing jumper set the score at 66-68 with seven minutes to go. Although, the two point deficit was the closest Union would get as Clarkson built on their lead in the final moments of the fourth quarter by hitting some clutch shots and limiting their turnovers.

Union honored its five graduating seniors prior to tonight's game and travels to RIT next week for an 8 p.m. (ET) tip off in Rochester, NY.
