Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Third period explosion leads to Dutchman victory

HAMDEN, CT – Three third-period goals propelled the Union College men's hockey team to a 5-2 win over Quinnipiac on Friday night.

The Dutchmen improved to 19-13-1 on the season with a 14-5-0 mark in ECAC Hockey play, good for second place in the standings. The Bobcats fall to 12-15-4 overall and sit in ninth place in the league with a conference record of 7-10-2.

In similar fashion to last week's game against Dartmouth, Union bent, but didn't break, as Quinnipiac outshot the Dutchmen 30-14 through the first two periods. Despite that lopsided advantage in shots, Union held a 2-1 lead through the first 40 minutes, thanks to goals from Greg Campbell and Ryan Scarfo.

The third period then opened with a flurry of offense, as the two teams combined for three goals in the first three minutes.

Starting the period with a man in the box, the Bobcats killed the penalty and, upon returning to full strength, quickly scored to tie the game up at 2-2. However, just over a minute later, Anthony Rinaldi stole the puck on a strong forecheck and sniped a shot over the shoulder of Andrew Shortridge to put Union back on top.

Quinnipiac made a switch in net after Rinaldi scored his 15th goal of the season, but Keith Petruzzelli wasn't given much of a warm welcome by the Dutchmen as Sean Harrison quickly scored his third goal of the season at the 3:12 mark of the period to put Union up 4-2.

With the wind taken out of their sails, the Bobcats were unable to muster much offense for the remainder of the period.

A shorthanded goal by the Dutchmen midway through the third period cemented the season sweep over Quinnipiac. Sebastian Vidmar caused a turnover at the Union blue line during a PK and went down the ice with for a breakaway. Vidmar's shot was stopped by Petruzzelli, but Brett Supinski crashed hard to the net as the second forward in and scored off the rebound for his seventh goal of the season.

Union takes on Princeton tomorrow night in its final road game of the regular season. A win against the Tigers keeps Union in the hunt for its fifth Cleary Cup title, as the Dutchmen sit two games behind Cornell with three games left to play in the regular season. Game time against the Tigers at Hobey Baker Rink is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
