SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's basketball team moves to 4-10 in Liberty League play after this evening's 48-36 victory over the Raptors.
Union got off to a slow start this evening, as the team would not score until the 7:43 mark during the first quarter. At that time, the Dutch responded to a Bard three-pointer with a layup from
Elly Vaughan, to make it a 2-3 game. Less than a minute later, senior
Jenni Barra drove through the lane to drain a jumper and help Union take its first lead of the game, at 4-3 with 6:57 to go. The Dutchwomen would pull away from the Raptors by as far as five points during the stretch, but end the first quarter leading just 8-6.
The second quarter posed some trouble for the Dutch, as they shot just 16 percent from the field and headed into halftime tied up with Bard at 14 points apiece.
To open up the second half, Union went on an unanswered six-point tear and pulled away from the Raptors, with its biggest lead so far in the night, to a 20-14 advantage. The Dutchwomen managed to run off with a 10-point lead, with less than four minutes to go in the third period, when
Helena Roland drained a jumper. Roland's basket gave the Dutchwomen their biggest lead overall in the midweek match-up.
Union helped solidify its win with a strong fourth quarter performance, where the Dutchwomen went 6-12 from the field and drained two baskets from behind the arc.
With tonight's victory, the Dutchwomen's overall record advances to 8-13. Union continues its homestand this weekend with a pair of games against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
