SCHENECTADY, NY - Sophomore
Charlie McGovern fired one home with 1:58 left in the first overtime period to lift Union past the Williams College Ephs, 9-8 this evening.
With the win, the Dutchmen remain undefeated on the year, standing at 3-0. Williams drops to 0-2 on the year.
Union came out strong early on, building a 6-3 lead by the end of the first half. Sophomore
Kerry Lyne contributed four of Union's six first-half goals, two of which were with a man-up advantage.
At the start of the second half, the Ephs seemed recharged and scored back-to-back goals from Rock Stewart and James McFarland. Lyne struck again with 5:13 to go in the third period, torching a shot under his left shoulder and helping Union pull away with a 7-5 lead.
Williams remained resilient and scored two unanswered goals over the remaining five minutes of the third period and once again in the start of the fourth. With their fourth quarter goal at 10:38, the Ephs threatened to take the game from Union as they took their first lead of the game at 8-7.
As the clock slipped closer to expiring, Union managed to clear the ball in front of its own and draw up a play. With less than four minutes to go in the regulation,
James Diver connected with
Hayden Frey, who netted the key equalizer to send the game into overtime.Â
Union maintained control of the ball throughout the majority of the 2:02 overtime play. McGovern lit up Williams' net at the 1:58 mark with a blazing shot that snapped the back of the net so fast, the status of the goal nearly came into question. Nevertheless, the Dutchmen stormed McGovern as his snipe ultimately lifted Union past the Ephs to move onto 3-0 this season.Â
"That was a great one," Head Coach
Paul Wehrum said. "That was a character win and we couldn't be prouder. Williams is a great team and we have a great tradition of playing against each other. For our alumni it's always a big win, they weren't able to beat Williams a lot so this one is for them."
The Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, March 10 to take on Springfield College.
