Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Princeton claims game one 5-3

SCHENECTADY, NY – A 20-game undefeated streak came to an end, as the Union College men's hockey team lost to Princeton for the first time since 2009, with the Tigers taking game one of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series, 5-3, on Friday night at Messa Rink.

Just like in the previous meeting between the two teams in February, Union started off hot. Less than two minutes in, Liam Morgan got the Dutchmen on the board with a backhand shot through traffic.

Despite the early Union goal, Princeton didn't lie down and continued to fight back. The Tigers evened the score at the 13:30 mark of the first period, before taking a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second period.

After trailing the Tigers for the first time since November, the Dutchmen got back on top before the end of the period with goals from Cole Maier and Anthony Rinaldi.

Union carried the 3-2 lead into the third period, but a Princeton power play led to the Tigers tying the game for a second time. Unfortunately, the Tigers would then capitalize on an errant line change by the Dutchmen to take a 4-3 lead with less than three minutes to play in regulation.

Princeton then capped off the win with an empty-net goal in the final two minutes to secure the game-one win.

The Dutchmen and the Tigers will play in game two of the series tomorrow night, back at Messa Rink. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET).
