Union sweeps Skidmore in road games

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Hot bats and strong pitching propelled the Union College baseball team to a pair of wins, 9-3 and 13-3, over Skidmore on Saturday afternoon.

On the day Union recorded 30 hits as the Dutchmen averaged .400 at the bat. First year Jack Koch went 7-for-8 (.875) between the two games, which included one double and one triple. Both Andy Labeck and Anthony Amoroso had six hits on the day, with Labeck hitting two doubles and one home run and Amoroso leading the Dutchmen with five RBI's.

Ryan Kuchar had a dominant performance on the mound in the second game, pitching the first seven innings without an earned run against. Jake Vesling pitched a complete game in the first outing, conceding just two earned runs through seven innings while striking out seven Thoroughbreds.

In game one, Skidmore took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Union quickly responded with two runs in the second and four runs in the third for the 6-1 lead. The Thoroughbreds put up another run in the bottom of the third and the two teams traded runs in the fifth as the Dutchmen held a 7-3 lead heading into the final inning.

Union then scored two runs on two hits in the top of the seventh, thanks to a single by Joe Ganim and a hit by pitch that score Labeck, for the eventual 9-3 win.

In game two, Union's bats continued to stay hot as the Dutchmen posted seven runs through the first three innings for a 7-1 lead. Koch went a perfect 5-for-5 in the nightcap and scored four runs, while Amoroso was 5-for-6 with four RBI's.

Union's biggest inning came in the top of the sixth as the Dutchmen used four hits and two errors to score five runs for a 12-1 lead. The Dutchmen then added a final run in the seventh before Skidmore scored two in the bottom of the eight to finish off their 17th win of the season.

The Dutchmen hit the road for a single midweek contest, taking on Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. (ET).
