Strong hitting propels Union to 13-8 win

AMSTERDAM, NY – Using 13 hits the Union College baseball team powered to a 13-8 win over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park.

First year Jack Koch led the way going 3-for-3 with two RBI's, while Jake Vesling followed up with two hits, including one home run, and four RBI's.

The Dutchmen got on the board in the bottom of the first after a double by Colin Kelly scored Koch from second. In the bottom of the second, Andy Labeck hit a lead-off home, before a balk scored Harrison Glatt and a sac-fly by Koch later allowed Joe Ganim to score for a 4-0 lead.

Plattsburgh State then got onto the score board in the third with a lone run on one hit. However, the Cardinals went on to take a 7-4 lead, with two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Union responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs on one hit to cut its deficit to just one run. In the sixth, Union opened up for four runs on four hits, including a two-run bomb by Vesling to take back the lead.

The Cardinals would add one run in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 10-8, but the Dutchmen added two runs in the bottom of the frame and one more in the eighth to secure the 13-8 win.

Charlie Hoover picked up his first collegiate win, pitching the final five innings and giving up only one run on two hits.

Union returns to Shuttleworth Park on Saturday, April 21, to host St. Lawrence in the first double header of a four-game weekend against the Saints. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
