SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College Dutchmen out shot St. Lawrence 7-1 during the last 32 minutes of play to come from behind and defeat the No. 18 Saints, 9-8 in overtime this afternoon.
The Saints came out aggressive and looked crisp on offense in the opening minutes of play. After the first quarter of play, St. Lawrence held a 4-1 lead and continued to force the Dutchmen to work on defense. By the end of the first half, Union trailed the Saints 2-7 and had just nine shots on net, compared to SLU's 28.
Fired up from the end of the first half, which involved a few unsportsmanlike penalties from both teams, the Dutchmen came out electric for the remaining 30 minutes of play. Senior captain
Sean Pensavalle started off the second half with a laser beam of a goal, with an assist coming from fellow classmate
Jordan Cooper.
Kerry Lyne had a goal of his own in the third quarter as well, that helped Union cut its deficit to three, with 15 minutes left to go.
With about eight minutes left to play, and still trailing by three, Cooper dished back-to-back assists to
Hayden Frey and
John Edmonds that had Union down by just one goal. St. Lawrence responded quickly and scored to separate themselves from Union by two goals at 8-6.Â
Fogo
Alex Newhouse, won a crucial face off at the 4:56 mark and passed the ball off to Edmonds who was able to score his fourth of the day and keep the Dutch within reach of the Saints. With under two minutes to go, Edmonds once again was able to come up clutch for the Dutchmen and tie the game at eight apiece and evidently force the game into overtime.Â
Despite the slow offensive start for the Dutchmen, Union out shot SLU 16-12 and out scored the Saints 6-1 in the second half.
With 2:51 remaining in the four-minute overtime period,
Charlie McGovern passed the ball off to
James Diver, who scored the ultimate game winner, and sent Bailey Field into a celebration frenzy.
Edmonds led the Dutchmen with four goals today, and senior attack Cooper also had four assists.Â
After today's electric win, Union advances to 3-2 in conference play and the Saints drop to 4-2. The Dutchmen will return to action next Wednesday for a midweek matchup with Capital District Rival, RPI.Â
