SCHENECTADY, NY - With an early, first-half scoring surge, the No. 17 RPI Engineers led the Dutchmen for 60 straight minutes this afternoon, en route to an 8-4 victory.
The nationally ranked Engineers came out aggressive on offense today, scoring three unanswered goals over the first 10 minutes of play. At the 5:21 mark, fogo
Alex Newhouse drove out of the face off and darted straight for the net to score his fifth goal of the season and cut Union's deficit to two. With a 3-1 lead, RPI's Ryan Cole scored with one minute to go in the first quarter and took a 4-1 advantage over the Dutchmen.
The Engineers scored twice more during the half, taking a commanding 6-1 lead. With a minute to go before the halftime break, senior
Jordan Cooper scored, with a man-up advantage, and pulled Union within four of RPI with 30 minutes left to play.Â
Senior goalkeeper and Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week,
Sam Bebout held RPI to just two goals during the second half, however, the stops weren't enough after the early surge. First year
Hayden Frey managed to net two goals during the second half but the Engineers had built an early, comfortable lead that allowed them to walk away with the 8-4 victory.Â
RPI's keeper Parker Smith had 17 saves for the Engineers, 14 of which came up clutch during the second half. Over the second half, the Dutchmen out shot RPI 16-8.
The Dutchmen return to action this Saturday for their last regular season home game. Union will face Vassar College on Frank Bailey Field at 12 p.m.
