Union splits with Saints

CANTON, NY -- In a tale of two tight games, the Union College Dutchwomen split with the St. Lawrence Saints, losing 4-2 and then coming back to win 8-5.

GAME ONE
Each team contributed a few errors and had eight hits apiece en route to a 4-2 ballgame during game one this afternoon.

St. Lawrence scored in the first four innings of play, which was ultimately enough to secure the win over the Dutchwomen.

The Saints scored their first two runs on a wild pitch and single down the left field line. Junior Dana Dolinko singled to center field in the top of the third inning to score Gigi Kieltyka and help cut Union's deficit in half. However, the Saints answered right back with two more runs through the third and fourth.

In a last stitch effort, Union scored again in the top of the sixth, thanks to a Catherine Raeter single that helped score pinch runner, Rebecca Kaufman. But, the comeback was not enough as Union had to settle for the game one loss.

GAME TWO
Thanks to 11 hits and a spotless defensive game, Union bounced back to steal game two from the Saints.

SLU took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, which ignited a Union comeback immediately in the top of the third.

Senior captain Courtney Casey singled to score Nikki Ditizio and Stuart Buxton. First year Kendall Rogoff immediately followed up with a double to left that scored Casey and tie the game up 3-3.

In the top of the fifth, Union struck again and tacked on four more runs to pull away with a comfortable 7-3 lead. Kim Puzo delivered a bases clearing double and Kayla Fisher contributed an RBI single during the fifth.

SLU responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, and put pressure on the Dutchwomen. However, Union tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to secure the victory and advance to 5-5 in conference play.

Union returns to action tomorrow for another double header against the University of Rochester. First pitch is slated for a 12 p.m. start time.
