Dutchmen sweep Brewers in doubleheader

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Union College baseball team defeated Vassar College, 12-1 and 9-6, in a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday.

The Dutchmen improve to 24-6 on the season and hold a conference record of 14-4.

Starting off the day, Union took advantage of miscues by the Brewers to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Union's lead-off hitter Jack Koch was hit, before Harrison Glatt was walked. Kirschenbaum then reached on an error after attempting to advance the runners on a bunt, which resulted in both Glatt and Koch scoring. Sean Cullen then followed up with the only hit of the inning to score Kirschenbaum for the three-run lead.

After the wild start, both defenses kept the game moving relatively quickly as neither side put up any more runs until the fifth, when the Brewers scored their lone run on a double.

Union then broke the game back open in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring a total of nine runs between the two frames. Colin Kelly hit a three-run homer in the sixth, while Koch bested it with a grand slam in the seventh.

Jake Vesling pitched the seven-inning complete game, giving up just the one run on six hits, while striking out seven.

In game two, the Brewers got their bats swinging better and briefly held a one-run lead over the Dutchmen in the middle part of the game. However, with a 3-2 deficit, Union put up four runs in the sixth and two in the eighth, before capping off the win with a single run in the ninth.

Andy Labeck, Joe Ganim, and Vesling all had two hits each in the nightcap, while Ganim led the Dutchmen with three RBI's.

Colin Nye earned the win, coming during the fifth inning and throwing 3.0 innings, before Nick Williams came in to finish off the final two innings for the save.

The Dutchmen and the Brewers finish off the weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow, April 29, at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam, NY. First pitch is slated for noon.
