Union wins in extra innings before rain delay

AMSTERDAM, NY – The Union College baseball team won its third-straight game against Vassar College this weekend, defeating the Brewers, 7-5, in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the third while Union was leading 5-0.

Vassar got on the board first, using a double in the first inning to score one run for the early lead. The Brewers kept Union off the board for the first three innings, but the Dutchmen took the lead in the bottom of the fourth behind two runs on two hits and one error. Sam Kirschenbaum hit a single to right field that scored both Sean Cullen and Harrison Glatt.

The Brewers then took back the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits. Wiley Knight responded for the Dutchmen with his third home run of the season to tie the game up at 3-3.

The sixth inning saw both teams score two runs apiece, as the Brewers briefly took back their lead once again. With Jake Vesling on second, Jack Koch entered as a pinch hitter and doubled on the first pitch he saw to score Veslign and put the tying run on base. A Vassar error would then allow Anthony Amoroso, who was pinch running for Koch, to score and tie the game up at 5-5.

As the game went into extra innings, sophomore pitcher Colin Nye kept the Brewers from gaining any hits and his short stop Colin Kelly finished off the game in the bottom of the eight with a walk-off home run.

In game two, Union quickly built up a 5-0 lead through the first three innings. Harrison Glatt hit his first home run of the season in the first inning to put Union up 2-0. In the third, Union scored three runs on four hits and one error before the game was stopped due to weather.

A date to finish game two is still to be determined. As the schedule stands, Union will be back in action on Tuesday, May 1, with a road game against Middlebury.
