MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Union College team dropped a 6-3 nonconference decision to Middlebury on Tuesday evening at Forbes Field.
Â
One big hit was the difference maker in the contest, as the Panthers hit a grand slam in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead. Union finally got on the board in the ninth inning, scoring three runs on three hits, and without the four-run shot by Middlebury, Union would have gained the lead. However, the Panthers escaped the final inning to hand the Dutchmen just their seventh loss of the season.
Â
Middlebury scored its first run on a ground ball in the fifth, before scoring their second run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the seventh. Alan Guild was the next batter up for the Panthers and hit the grand slam for the 6-0 lead.
Â
In the ninth,
Kevin Chaimowitz led off with a base on balls. First years
Chris O'Brien and
Mike Papaleo hit back-to-back singles to load the bases.
Â
Sean Cullen then stepped up and hit a third-straight single for the Dutchmen, allowing Chaimowitz to score.
Chris Symington then earned a base on balls which gave O'Brien the free pass home for Union's second run.
Â
Later with one out.
Will Bellamy hit a ground ball and reached on a fielder's choice which also allowed Papaleo to score, but with the Panthers getting the second out, they were then able to end the game with the next at-bat.
Â
Union will be back at Shuttleworth Park for its final nonconference game of the regular season, hosting Trinity College at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
