AMSTERDAM, NY – Sophomore
Colin Kelly hit two home runs and three doubles to help propel the Union College baseball team to 6-3 and 17-4 wins against Clarkson on Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.
Â
The Old Greenwich, CT native went 3-for-4 in the first game, before hitting two home runs and going 4-for-6 in game two. Overall he hit six RBI's, scored five runs and totaled 16 bases.
Â
With the wins and the four-game weekend sweep, Union is now 12-4 on the season with a 6-2 mark in Liberty League play, good for first place.
Â
Junior
Andy Labeck also had a tremendous outing for the Dutchmen, hitting three home runs on the day, including back-to-back dingers in game two. He hit .667 on the day, but bested Kelly's slugging percentage with a 1.667 mark. Labeck totaled seven RBI's, five runs and 15 bases.
Â
Game one against the Golden Knights started off with both teams putting up solo runs in the first inning. Kelly hit a double on his first at-bat of the day to score
Jack Koch for Union's first run. Labeck later scored in the top of the second after a throw by the catcher to third base went into the outfield.
Â
The Golden Knight tied the game up in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits, but that would be their final scoring of the game.
Â
A single by
Joe Ganim scored
Harrison Glatt in the fourt, and Labeck hit his first home run of the season for two runs in the sixth.
Sam Kirschenbaum hit a single in the top of the seventh to score Kelly from second, topping off the Union win at 6-3.
Â
Game two started off with a bang, as Union scored five runs on seven hits and one error in the top of the first, before Clarkson scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame. Kelly hit a three-run homer to score the first three runs for Union, and a Labeck solo home run and a Jack Meyers single provided the following two runs.
Â
Labeck then stepped up for his next at bat in the second and hit a bomb over the left field wall for back-to-back homers and an 8-2 Union lead.
Â
Clarkson added solo runs in the third and fifth innings, while Union put up single runs in the fourth, thanks to a Kelly home run, and seventh innings as the game moved to a 10-4 score into the final inning. That's when Union made sure there was no chance of a comeback for the Golden Knights.
Â
The Dutchmen put together seven runs on eight hits and one error, for their single-most runs in an inning this season. Kelly led off with a single to left field before gaining second on a wild pitch and third off a single by
Sean Cullen. A single by Labeck drove home Kelly, while a one-out sac-fly by Meyers allowed Cullen to score. An error by Clarkson's third base extended the inning and gave Labeck a path home. Kirschenbaum hit a double to left for two RBI's, while Kelly came back up to bat and hit another single, but this time for an RBI as Kirschenbaum scored. Cullen singled on his second at-bat of the inning to score Koch for the final run of the contest.
