Women's basketball announces 2018 recruiting class

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Head Coach Mary Ellen Burt and the Union College Women's Basketball Program are excited to introduce the seven members of Union's 2018 recruiting class.

"We are thrilled to welcome our seven committed athletes," Burt said.  "We've recruited some true competitors who will provide us with the speed, skill, and depth to play at a tempo we have not been able to play in a few years."

Erin Clinton, PG/SG, Pearl River High School (NY)

Coach's Take: "Erin Clinton comes from a tremendous basketball pedigree. She's the daughter of Union College Hall of Fame Point Guard Joe Clinton, and clearly has his aggressiveness and court vision. She's extremely competitive and we are optimistic that her intensity combined with her experience as a standout high school track athlete will provide her with the quickness and confidence to stand out in years to come."

Darby Leid, SG, Wayland High School (MA)

Coach's Take: "It's extremely rare to come across a high school student as exemplary a leader as Darby was for both Wayland and the Mass Huskies. We've talked to a number of coaches in the region who have been impressed by Darby's communication and IQ on the floor. She's a standout defender as a result, and her mentality as a scorer has improved each year that we've watched her. We think she has the potential to be a contributor in the future.

Anna Metcalf, G/F, The Wheeler School (RI)

Coach's Take: "It's exciting anytime you land the leading scorer in her high school program's history; but there's so much more to Anna than scoring.  She's a remarkable open court defender, a very unselfish teammate, and an athlete that will help contribute to our transition attack in the open court. We are excited to see the impact she will have in the years to come."

Amber Raisner, PG/SG, William Hall High School (CT)

Coach's Take: "There are many individual accolades that can be associated with Amber's career at Hall, but what stands out to us most is Hall's accomplishments as a team under her leadership.  Amber led Hall to a class LL state championship appearance game and a #4 state ranking after Hall was the 32nd ranked team just two years earlier.  Amber strikes us as the type of player that can will a team to victory, and we are really excited to see how she plays off of some of her other incoming teammates in the backcourt."

Maggie Schuermann SG, Cooperstown High School (NY)

Coach's Take: "Maggie is a tough cookie. We've had her at our prospect day each of the last two seasons and both years she was all over the court trying to make an impact. She compensates for her size by always going for rebounds, diving for loose balls, and sprinting on every possession. You know it's going to be a good fit when your team leaders tell you "Maggie is the type of player that will make us better every day."

Laura Vinton G/F, Wachusett Regional High School (MA)

Coach's Take: "We've always been at our best when we've had some "glue" players, and Laura Vinton is the quintessential glue player. She has a very high IQ and a tremendous feel for the game. She's a solid passer, finisher, defender, and rebounder. Laura's game is all about those little details. We can't wait to see how she contributes to the team."

Lauren DiLoreto F, East Catholic High (CT)

Coach's Take: "Lauren is a welcomed addition to our post unit.  She comes from the CT Cobras, one of the best AAU programs in the Northeast; and she will afford us the ability to stretch the floor with her consistent shooting form.  Her size and strength, combined with the versatility of her offensive game gives her the potential to make a long term impact at multiple positions."

"Overall, I think these seven are going to have a great impact, and combined with some of our special returners, we will be a really fun team to watch next season," Burt said.
