Union drops extra-innings contest to Babson

Only one out away from advancing on to the third round on the winners bracket ath the 2018 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, the Union College baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision in 10 innings to Babson College on Saturday night at PeoplesBank Park.

Union (31-12) will now play Virginia Wesleyan in the single-elimination bracket, while Babson (34-10) advances to play Misericordia.

The Beavers got on the board first with a two-RBI double in the very first inning for the early lead. Harrison Glatt got the Dutchmen on the board in the bottom of the third with a grounder to score Wiley Knight.

Babson then extended its lead to 3-1 in the fifth, but Union came up big in the bottom of the sixth with three runs on three hits to take a 4-3 lead.

Glatt led off the sixth with a single, Jake Vesling followed up with a single of his own, and Colin Kelly was then walked to load the bases. Sean Cullen hit ball in the gap to short, but beat the throw and allowed Glatt to score. Andy Labeck and Sam Kirschenbaum then hit back-to-back sac flies for the final two runs of the inning.

Union held the one-run lead into the ninth and was just one strike away from walking away with the win. Unfortunately, the Beavers hit a triple with a runner on first to push the game into extra innings. Babson then took the lead in the 10th after a two-out error allowed the Beavers to score.

Saturday's contest against Virginia Wesleyan is set to begin at 1:15 p.m. (ET). The winner will then play the winner between Arcadia and Rowan at 7:45 p.m.
