AMSTERDAM, NY – The Union College baseball team sent its seniors off in style as the Dutchmen put up a combined 28 runs against RPI to win the final two games of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The Dutchmen won the first game 11-1, before taking the nightcap 17-4.
Â
With the two wins, Union finishes the season with a 27-10 overall record and in second place in the Liberty League with a 17-6 conference record.
Â
Sophomore
Colin Kelly led the way for the Dutchmen going 6-for-9 (.667) on the day, which included two home runs and one triple. He had six RBI's on the day, bringing his season total to 55.
Â
Senior
Bill Christopher pitched a complete game in the first game of the day, giving up just one run on three hits for his third win of the season.
Josh Garber picked up the win in the nightcap, pitching five innings for his third win of the season as well.
Â
Game one started off with Union putting up four runs in the first inning behind three hits, which included a two-RBI triple by Kelly.
Â
Harrison Glatt would later hit a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth to score
Joe Ganim and put Union up 5-0.
Â
In the final inning of offense for the Dutchmen in game one, Kelly led off with a home run over the right field wall to get things rolling. Five hits later, Union would leave the inning with five more runs and an 11-1 lead.
Â
In the nightcap, the Engineers would go through nine different pitchers, but none of them would have an answer to the hot hitting Dutchmen.
Â
Union started off with another big first inning, this time scoring six runs on six hits. The Engineers would respond in the following two innings, scoring four runs to cut their deficit to two heading into the bottom of the third.
Â
However, after the two two-run innings by RPI, it would be all Union baseball for the final six innings. RPI would only muster three hits over those final six innings, while the Dutchmen would go on to score 11 more runs to take the 17-4 win.
Â
Colin Kelly hit his 12th home run of the season, going opposite yard for a two-run shot on just the second pitch in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Union will now take part in the 2018 Liberty League Championships, hosted by Rochester, May 10-12. The No. 2 seeded Dutchmen will take on No. 3 seed Vassar on Thursday, May 10, beginning at 2 p.m. (ET).
