Second-Half Rally Propels Field Hockey to Win

CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore Abby Torgerson recorded the first multi-goal game of her career as the Union College field hockey stormed back from a halftime deficit to defeat Castleton University by a 5-3 score in the team's 2018 season-opener on Friday night.

Torgerson had a big game for the Dutchwomen, scoring two goals on three shots off the bench. Junior Charlotte Leyland and sophomore Laura Wind added a goal and an assist each for the visitors, while sophomore Cici Lyne scored the first goal of her career as well in the victory.

Trailing 2-1 at the half, Union turned up the offensive intensity in the final 35 minutes, outshooting the Spartans 13-4 and scoring four times to take control of the game. Wind and Leyland scored less than 100 seconds apart to give Union its first lead of the game with 31:03 remaining in the contest, and Torgerson made it three and then four goals in a row for the Dutchwomen with back-to-back tallies in the 51st and 57th minutes.

At the other end, sophomore Heather Poisson made nine saves on 14 total shots to pick up the victory.

Union will return to action next Saturday, when the Dutchwomen host Wheaton (Mass.) College in their 2018 home opener beginning at 11 a.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
