SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Cici Lyne scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute as the Union College field hockey team scored the final three goals of the game to earn a 4-3 comeback victory over Wheaton (Mass.) College on Saturday Frank Bailey Field.
Four different players scored goals and six different players recorded a point for Union in the victory, which moves the Dutchwomen to 2-0 on the year for the first since since 2008. Junior
Sarah Wilkinson, sophomore
Katie Talacci and senior
Alexa Puleio also scored as well for the home team.
Wilkinson scored in the ninth minute off a pass from sophomore
Laura Wind to knot the score early on, but Wheaton scored with seconds remaining in the first half and then took a two-goal lead on a Liz Helmrich goal in the 44th minute.
But the Union offense exploded after that, beginning with a Talacci tally less than three minutes after Helmrich's score that got the home team back within one at the 46:25 mark. Puleio knotted the score at the 57:05 mark off a pass from senior
Hannah Christian, and then Lyne found the net less than five minutes later to put Union ahead. Wheaton applied pressure in the final minutes looking to tie the score, but sophomore
Heather Poisson made a pair of saves, including one in the final minute, to keep her team ahead.
The two teams finished the match with 14 shots apiece, with Poisson turning aside six shots to pick up her second straight win.
Union will return to action on Wednesday, when the team travels to Morrisville State College for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match.
