Leyland's Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey Past Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Charlotte Leyland recorded her first career hat trick to lead an all-out offensive assault for the Union College field hockey team, as the Dutchwomen scored the final five goals of the game to earn a 6-1 victory over Morrisville State College on Wednesday afternoon at Drake Field.

Union (3-0) improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2008 with a dominant performance, outshooting Morrisville 38-5 with a 26-1 edge in shots on goal. Leyland led the way with a career-high seven points, scoring three goals with an assist. Her three goals and seven points are the most by a Dutchwoman since Bretta Beer '16 had four goals and eight points in a win over Castleton State College on September 1, 2015.

In addition, sophomore Katie Talacci scored twice with an assist for a career-best five points, while sophomore Abby Stack also scored and classmate Laura Wind added a pair of assists.

Union held a 14-4 edge in shots over the first 35 minutes, and yet the game was tied at one entering halftime. Leyland opened the scoring in the ninth minute, but Morrisville State evened the score in the 20th minute.

The second half was all Union, however, as the visitors outshot the Mustangs 24-1 and scored five times to take control. Leyland scored the eventual game-winner on a reverse sweep 1:06 into the second half, followed by a highlight-reel goal from Talacci that was scored at the far post despite being prone on her side at the time.

Stack scored less than four minutes later and Leyland completed her hat trick with 21:13 left on the clock, followed by Talacci's second of the game 80 seconds later that provided the final score.

Sophomore Mary Beth Rudolf was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught, picking up her first win of the season in goal.

Union will go for its fourth straight win to start the season on Sunday, when the Dutchwomen welcome FDU-Florham to Frank Bailey Field for a 1 p.m. matchup.
