Field Hockey Drops First Game to FDU-Florham

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A late-game push by the Union College field hockey team came up short on Sunday afternoon, as the Dutchwomen were dealt their first loss of the season by FDU-Florham, 6-3, in a non-conference matchup at Bailey Field.

Junior Charlotte Leyland led Union (3-1) with a goal and an assist, while sophomores Katie Talacci and Abby Stack also scored for the Dutchwomen, who were seeking their first 4-0 start since 1993. Brooke Sherwin had a game-high two goals to pace FDU-Florham (6-1).

The opening half featured chances for both teams, but the game remained scoreless until the final three minutes. After FDU's Kelly O'Neill opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, Stack responded less than a minute later with her second goal of the year off a deflected corner attempt.

The Devils upped the offensive pressure in the second half, boasting a 10-2 edge in corners and a 19-3 advantage in shots while scoring five times.

But down 5-1 with under 10 minutes remaining, Union put a scare into the Devils, scoring twice and nearly netting a third. Talacci took a feed from Leyland for a goal with 9:48 remaining, then Leyland picked up a loose ball and went in all by herself for her team-leading fifth goal of the year with 7:44 on the clock. Leyland nearly had another goal with under four minutes left that would have really put the pressure on the visitors, but it was called back.

For the game, FDU-Florham outshot Union by a 28-6 margin. Sophomore Heather Poisson kept Union in the contest by making 14 saves, including nine in the second half.

Union will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday, when the team travels to Ramapo College for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.
