MAHWAH, N.J. – Union College dug itself an early hole and never could fully recover as the Dutchwomen dropped a 5-3 contest to Ramapo College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon at the Ramapo Athletic Center.
Junior
Charlotte Leyland tied for the game-high with three points on a goal and an assist to lead Union (3-2), while sophomores
Katie Talacci and
Laura Wind both scored as well for the visitors. Leyland now has four games of three or more points in five outings this season, while Talacci has at least one point in every game so far in 2018.
The game did not get off to a good start for Union, as Ramapo scored on its first two shots to put the Dutchwomen in a quick 2-0 hole just 2:12 into the contest. Wind got one goal back in the sixth minute of play, but the Roadrunners struck again in the 10th minute and added another in the 28th to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Union again did not go quietly, getting back within a goal after scores by Talcci and Leyland on both sides of halftime. However, another Ramapo goal with 5:11 left in regulation sealed the victory for the home team.
Ramapo finished with a slight 16-15 edge in shots on the afternoon. Samantha Stolker made seven saves to earn the win for the home team, while sophomore
Mary Beth Rudolf made six saves in suffering the loss for Union.
Union will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, when the team travels to Ithaca College for its Liberty League opener beginning at 1 p.m.
