Men's Tennis Downs Bard in Liberty League Opener

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team got its Liberty League schedule off to a good start on Tuesday night, defeating Bard College by an 8-1 score at the Stevenson Athletic Center Tennis Courts.

Junior Justin Gold and freshman Jack Andre both were dual winners for Union on the day, as the Dutchmen swept the three doubles flights before taking five of the six singles matches. Andre was also one of four Union players to pick up their first collegiate dual match wins on the evening, joining classmates Ioannis Binopoulos, Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman.

Union had little trouble to start the match in doubles play, dropping only three games in the three matches. Andre and Gold started things off with an 8-0 win at third doubles against Lyle Healey and Daniyal Zafar, followed closely by the brother tandem of sophomores Austin Egna and Max Egna, who won by the same score. Binopoulos and senior Max McGeown completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 first-doubles victory.

Andre and junior Ian Bank clinched the match with quick victories at sixth and fifth singles, respectively, both winning by the same 6-0, 6-0 scores, while Gold also threw up a pair of zeroes at fourth singles as well. Klepper earned his first dual match win with an efficient 6-1, 6-2 triumph at third singles, followed closely by Weitzman's 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles.

Union will return to action on Friday, when the Dutchmen host Manhattanville College in the first and only home dual match of the fall season beginning at 5 p.m.
