SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union College junior midfielder Paige Sherling netted the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute to give head coach Brian Speck his 300th collegiate victory, leading the Dutchwomen over #24 Vassar, 1-0, in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon from College Park Field.
With the win, Speck becomes the 31st coach in Division III women's soccer history to reach 300 career victories, as well as the 23rd to do so with only one school. His mark at Union stands at 300-100-33 (.731) in 24 seasons, ranking him 26th in D-III in career winning percentage and 16th among active D-III coaches. Speck's teams have never had a losing season in his first 23 years, the 10th longest streak in D-III women's soccer history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Union scored the lone goal of the match in the 22nd minute when Sherling looped in a curling shot from the top of the box into the bottom right corner of the net. AÂ flurry of scoring chances for both teams were not converted as the the Dutchwomen held an 1-0 edge heading into halftime.
- The Brewers saw multiple efforts come off the crossbar in the second half. The visitors' best opportunity of the game came in the 64th minute when Union junior defender Julia Ferrelli cleared a Rebecca Andrews header off the goal line. The game ended 1-0, with Vassar outshooting the Dutchwomen, 16-4 in the period.
- Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Hartsoe recorded a career-high 11 saves, including six in the second stanza to keep the clean sheet for Union.
- Union improves to 1-1 in Liberty League play with the win, its first over a nationally ranked team since a 2-1 win over New Paltz on September 5, 2012.
