Leyland and Sadak Spark Field Hockey in 3-1 Win

Video Highlights

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –
Senior Charlotte Leyland had a hand in all three Union College goals as the Dutchwomen defeated Hartwick College by a 3-1 score in non-conference field hockey action on a chilly Wednesday night at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Leyland more than doubled her season point total in the win, scoring twice and adding an assist for five points. Sophomore Katherine Sadak also scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist as well in the victory for Union (3-5).

Union struck first with 2:10 remaining in the opening quarter, as Sadak got possession along the near end line and threaded a pass into the goal mouth for Leyland, who knocked in her third goal of the season.

The Dutchwomen looked to take their lead into the first quarter break, but Hartwick (6-3) knotted the score with 27 seconds on the clock on Allyson Quirk's fifth goal of the year. Neither team could find the net in the second stanza despite a combined five penalty corners and seven shots.

Union dominated play in the decisive third quarter, outshooting Hartwick by a 7-2 margin and scoring the frame's only two goals to take back the lead for good. Leyland gave the Dutchwomen back the lead 3:29 into the quarter off a short feed in front by junior Katie Talacci, while a long pass forward by Leyland sprung Sadak for her first collegiate goal with 3:49 remaining.

The home team held off a determined Hawks squad in the fourth quarter, fighting off four penalty corners and getting three late saves from junior Mary Beth Rudolf to secure the win. Rudolf finished with six saves and freshman Eliza Munns added a defensive save as the teams finished the night with 13 shots apiece.

Union will return to action on Saturday, when the Dutchwomen host NFHCA #6 Vassar College at Frank Bailey Field beginning at 4:30 p.m.
