SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College gave a huge scare to #6 Vassar College on Saturday afternoon, but the Dutchwomen's valiant effort came up just short in a 1-0 (OT) loss to the Brewers in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Going up against one of the top teams in the country, Union showed tremendous heart in keeping Vassar scoreless through regulation for the first time in 10 games this season. Junior
Mary Beth Rudolf made 10 saves and also was benefited by defensive saves from sophomore
Anna Trancozo and freshman Jillian Bove, as the Dutchwoman defense frustrated the Vassar offense for much of the day.
Union held Vassar without a shot in the first quarter and only two attempts in the second stanza, as the home team posted a 3-2 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners over the first 30 minutes of action. Vassar asserted itself offensively in the second half, putting nine shots toward the Union goal, but Rudolf and the Dutchwoman defense were up to the task with seven saves to keep the game scoreless after 60 minutes.
The wide-open overtime session predictably saw more opportunities for both teams, with Vassar holding an 8-5 edge in shots. Rudolf made four excellent saves to keep the Brewers off the board, but Vassar finally broke through at the 8:33 mark of overtime when Cristina Lopez snuck a second-chance shot past Rudolf for the game's only goal.
Union will finish off its non-conference slate with two games next week, starting with a Tuesday evening matchup with Centenary University at Frank Bailey Field beginning at 6 p.m.
