POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker at Vassar College on Friday afternoon, falling by a 3-2 (14-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-12, 17-15) score in Liberty League action at Kenyon Hall.
Four players reached double figures in kills for Union (11-12, 0-6 Liberty League), led by juniors
Julia Louis and
Lara Atalay with 13 kills apiece. Atalay added 11 digs for her 14th double-double of the season, while classmate
Gillian Gore also registered her 14th double-double of the year with 12 kills and a match-high 25 digs.
Fellow junior
Katie Moss also chipped in 12 kills on .435 hitting as well, while junior
Kaylee Velasquez added 14 digs and four service aces for the Dutchwomen.
Claire Basler-Chang led Vassar (6-16, 2-4 Liberty League) with a match-high 19 kills and just one error on 47 attacks (.383).
Paced by three aces from Velasquez, Union took control of the opening set with a 10-1 run that turned a tie score into a 14-5 UC lead. After Vassar took the second stanza, the Dutchwomen used another 10-1 run to take control of the third frame, taking a 17-8 lead led by three kills from Moss. Vassar turned the tables again in the fourth, however, using an extended 15-3 run to force the match into a deciding stanza.
Both teams hit well in the fifth set, as Union put down 13 kills on 30 attempts (.333) and Vassar hit .357 with 12 kills on 28 swings. The Dutchwomen jumped out to an early lead and did not trail until extra points, as the visitors had match points at 14-13 and 15-14 but could not convert. An unlucky ace off the net gave Vassar its first match point, and the Brewers earned the decisive point to pick up the win.
The Dutchwomen will close out their home and conference schedule tomorrow, when Union hosts Bard College for Senior Day beginning at 4 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
