Dutchwomen Stay Alive with 4-0 Win at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Sophomore Fiona Zimmerman scored twice and added an assist to lead the Union College women's soccer team to a crucial 4-0 victory over Skidmore College on Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field.

The win keeps Union (8-6-1, 3-4-1 Liberty League) in the hunt for a postseason berth with one game to go, as the Dutchwomen sit in seventh place, just two points back of Ithaca College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a tie for fifth place. Since Ithaca and RPI play each other next, Union can crack the top-six and make the conference tournament with a win in its regular-season finale against Clarkson University on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Dutchwomen opened up the scoring versus the Thoroughbreds in the 20th minute. Sophomore Emma Schleimer scored the first goal off a penalty kick to give Union the lead early. Schleimer's goal is her sixth of the season, and 14th point to add to her team-lead in both categories.
  • Zimmerman also added to her growing point total in her first season at Union, collecting the second goal of the game in the 36th minute. Zimmerman shot in from in the box and chipped the keeper to make it a 2-0 game going into halftime.
  • Zimmerman added to her total by scoring Union's third goal of the game. The sophomore blasted the ball into the top corner from the other side of the box to make it a 3-0 game in the 60th minute.
  • Union didn't stop there, courtesy of sophomore Bella Dworkin. Dworkin got the ball from Zimmerman and finished the play in the top corner of the goal to make it 4-0 in the 66th minute.
  • Union had the advantage in shots, 15-10. Junior Alison Sorkenn saved six shots, and sophomore Katie Piechnik came in the 74th minute to get action in her third game this season.

WHAT'S NEXT:

Union will conclude the regular season at home against Clarkson, as the Dutchwomen look to keep their season alive beginning at 2 p.m. at College Park Field.
