SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Senior Linsey Giles scored a pair of goals in her final appearance at College Park Field as the Union College women's soccer team defeated Clarkson University, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon to clinch a berth in the Liberty League Tournament.
Needing a victory in its last game of the regular season to assure themselves their first conference tournament appearance in three years, Union (9-6-1, 4-1-1 Liberty League) scored once late in the first half and then tacked on three more goals in the second half to defeat Clarkson (9-8-1, 2-7-0 Liberty League). In addition to Giles' two goals, sophomores Emma Schleimer and Erin O'Shea scored as well for the home team in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With just 64 seconds left in the first half, the Dutchwomen got on the board first. Sophomore Fiona Zimmerman took the ball to the far endline and lofted a ball into the penalty box where Giles was there to head it home.
- With her assist on Giles' first goal of the game, Zimmerman moved into second in the Liberty League in assists with seven.
- Union was hungry coming in the second half, as Schleimer beat a Clarkson defender to a long ball and then dribbled the ball around the keeper before shooting into an empty net, doubling the lead.
- Clarkson responded quickly to Union's tally, scoring off a penalty kick to shorten the Dutchwomen lead. Camryn Careccia was credited with the first and only goal of the game for the Golden Knights.
- Union wanted another goal to seal the victory. Sophomore Bella Dworkin passed it to Giles, and Giles curled the ball in at the far post to give the Dutchwomen a 3-1 lead.
- With two goals, this marks Giles' first multi-goal game since the 2016 season and her first multi-point game of the year.
- The Dutchwomen added to their lead in the 76th minute, with sophomore Erin O'Shea's second goal of the year. After a cross was punched away by the Clarkson keeper, O'Shea corralled the ball and kicked it over her head and past the goalie to secure the Union victory in the 76th minute.
- Union dominated in shots, 14-8. Junior goalkeeper Alison Sorkenn finished with three saves for her ninth win of the season.
