Dutchwomen Drop ECAC Opener to #5/6 Clarkson

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— In a battle between two conference foes, Clarkson's defensive pressure and ability to capitalize was too much for the Dutchwomen to handle. The Union College women's hockey team fell to the #5/6 Clarkson Golden Knights at Messa Rink on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first period, ECAC leading scorer Elizabeth Giguere scored the first goal of the conference contest. Giguere shot it in past first-year goaltender Bella McKee in front, after getting the puck from Gabrielle David. Michaela Pejzlova got the secondary assist on the play, giving the puck to David at center ice.
  • Clarkson wasn't done and scored just minutes later. On the power play, Clarkson capitalized early as Taylor Turnquist scored. Brooke McQuigge and Ella Shelton helped set up the Turnquist goal that gave the visitors a healthy 2-0 lead going into the second intermission.
  • The nationally-ranked Golden Knights added to their tally early in the third, with a goal from Kristy Pidgeon to open up the last twenty. Pidgeon's penalty expired, and she grabbed the puck from Avery Mitchell's pass, to shoot it in from the left circle and make it a 3-0 game. McQuigge collected her second assist on Pidgeon's first goal of the season.
  • Pejzlova solidified the win for Clarkson, scoring in the last minute and a half, with passes from Shelton and David to give the conference contest a 4-0 final score in favor of the visitors from Potsdam.
  • Senior Katelynn Russ and sophomore Cassidy Michalicka led the Dutchwomen in shots, with both of them getting three a piece.
  • The Golden Knights, by a 55-14 margin, outshot the Dutchwomen in the Friday match-up. McKee finished with 51 saves in her fifth start of the season, and her first taste of ECAC conference play. Clarkson goaltender Marie-Pier Coulombe handled the Dutchwomen's barrage, stopping 14 shots in-route of her first ECAC win and fourth overall win of the season.
  • Union moves their record to 0-7-1, and 0-1-0 in ECAC play after tonight's game. Clarkson improves to 6-1-2 and gets its first conference win of the season.
