DARTMOUTH, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth outscored Union College 20-6 in the decisive second quarter and the Dutchwomen could never recover as the Corsairs earned a 59-44 victory in the consolation game of the 2019 Lafrance Hospitality Invitational, hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon.
In contrast to yesterday's game, when Union shot well in hanging with a tough Babson squad, the visitors had a tough time finding the basket on Sunday. Union shot just 29.8 percent (17 of 57) from the field and 15.0 percent (3 of 20) from beyond the arc.
Sophomore
Amber Raisner was the lone Dutchwoman in double figures with 11 points to go with four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Senior
Elly Vaughan chipped in seven points and nine rebounds as well for Union (1-2).
The visitors jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead thanks to a three from senior
Joana Santos and a layup by sophomore
Anna Metcalf. UMD battled back and the two teams exchanged the lead four times during the opening quarter, which finished with the score knotted at 16.
Things went downhill quickly in the second quarter, however. The Dutchwomen missed their first nine shots of the stanza and turned the ball over six times during the second 15 minutes of play, which allowed the Corsairs to outscore Union by 14 points to take a 36-22 lead into the locker rooms.
Union played UMass Dartmouth even during the third and fourth quarters, but the visitors were unable to get the deficit to less than 10 points at any point the rest of the way.
The Dutchwomen will take some time off for finals and Thanksgiving break before returning to the court on December 2 with a non-conference matchup at St. John Fisher College.
