Dutchwomen Tie with RIT, 2-2

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— After a slow start to the game, the third period was one full of goals, but the efforts weren't enough for either team, as the Union College women's hockey team tied the RIT Tigers, by a 2-2 tally, at Messa Rink on Tuesday night.

The Union offense had arguably the better play of the second and third periods, outshooting the Tigers 21-15 in that timespan. First-year Carmen Merlo collected the first goal and point of her career in the third, and senior Megan Ryan got her first of the season to start the game off strong.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 13:57 2nd (Union 1-0) | After a scoreless first period, Union got on the board first. Sophomore Grace Heiting was behind the net with the puck and passed it to Ryan, who scored right in front, past the RIT goaltender. Ryan's goal, her first of the season, was the only goal in forty minutes of play. Senior Cheyenne Harris was credited with the secondary assist.
  • 6:43 3rd (Union 2-0) | The Dutchwomen scored again quickly in the third. RIT tried to take it to their end, but the puck got in the hands of Merlo, who scored on a breakaway. Merlo's unassisted goal was the first of her career.
  • 12:01 3rd (RIT 2-1) | A penalty didn't stop the Tigers from scoring their first of the game. Maddie Dunham scored her first of the season shorthanded, while Rachel Goff collected the assist on the play.
  • 17:56 3rd (RIT 2-2) | RIT's Jordan Marchese shot the puck, and Madison Farrand got the rebound and shot it to Jade Mancini, who scored the game-tying goal.

GAME NOTES:

  • Union led in shots on goal, 33-27. First-year Emily King led all players in the game with six individually.
  • First-year goaltender Bella McKee stopped 26, while her RIT counterpart, Terra Lanteigne, stopped 31.
  • Ryan's game-opening goal was the sixth goal of her career and her third point on the season.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The Dutchwomen have the weekend off, before heading on a non-conference road trip to Erie, Pa. to take on CHA foe Mercyhurst. Puck drop for the first game of the series is scheduled on November 29th at 3 p.m.
