Erie, Pa. — First-year forward Emma Michalicka scored her first career point, and first-year Bella McKee had 32 saves, but that wasn't enough on Friday afternoon, as the Union College women's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 4-3 in overtime at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
The Dutchwomen scored in all three periods of the game and capitalized on a power play in the third period to tie the game, courtesy of sophomore Maia Martinez. With the non-conference loss, Union falls to 2-10-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 1:21 1st (Mercyhurst 1-0): Mercyhurst got on the board early. Summer-Rae Dobson picked up the puck and passed it to an open Emily Pinto, who got it past McKee to make it a 1-0 game. Alexane Rheaume was credited with the secondary assist on the play.
- 8:27 1st (Mercyhurst 2-0): Just 7 minutes after her first goal, Pinto picked up another feed from Dobson to increase their advantage.
- 12:30 1st (Union 2-1): Union didn't want to end the first twenty minutes without a bit of the action. Sophomore Cassidy Michalicka grabbed the puck from the face-off, and her sister, first-year Emma Michalicka, got the puck past Mercyhurst goaltender Kennedy Blair and denied the Lakers the shutout. First-year Carmen Merlo was credited with the secondary assist.
- 13:47 2nd (Union 2-2): After a slow start to the second period, Union scored. Senior Rachel de Perio got the puck from along the boards and passed it to sophomore Grace Heiting, who was on her left wing. Heiting scored and tied the game for the Dutchwomen. Sophomore Katie Sonntag was credited with the secondary assist.
- 17:16 2nd (Mercyhurst 3-2): Mercyhurst took back their lead just four minutes after Union tied it, courtesy of a goal from Alexa Vasko. Emma Nuutinen and Sam Isbell, the Mercyhurst leaders in points and assists, respectively, were credited with assists.
- 6:38 3rd (Union 3-3): After Mercyhurst's Aubrey Cole was put in the box for her second penalty of the game, senior Megan Ryan grabbed the puck and passed it to Martinez, who capitalized on the PP to tie it, and bring the game into OT. De Perio got her third point of the season with a secondary assist on the game-tying goal.
- 0:36 OT (Mercyhurst 4-3): Dobson collected her third point of the game on the game-winning goal to secure a win for the Lakers.
