Men's Lax Grounds the Gulls in 2019 Opener

BEVERLY, Mass. – Senior John Edmonds and sophomore Hayden Frey scored a game-high four goals apiece to lead the Union College men's lacrosse team to a season-opening 15-7 win over Endicott College on Wednesday night at Hempstead Stadium.

Edmonds had a ridiculously efficient day on offense for Union (1-0), scoring four times on four shots, while Frey also netted a career-high four tallies – including a highlight-reel behind-the-back score early in the third quarter. Sophomore Brian Davis added four points on two goals and two assists in his Dutchman debut, and junior Michael Sands also had four points with a goal and a game-high three helpers.

Endicott (0-2) scored the first goal of the first quarter and the final goal of the second stanza, but the rest of the opening half belonged to Union, as the Dutchmen rattled off nine straight goals to take a 9-2 lead into the half. Sands assisted on goals by Edmonds and senior James Diver before scoring one himself as the visitors led 3-1 after 15 minutes.

Union then took control in the second, scoring six straight goal and outshooting Endicott 16-3. Eight different players got on the scoresheet in the stanza, including a goal and an assist from sophomore Keaton McCann, as the Dutchmen took a seven-goal lead after 30 minutes.

Frey began the third quarter with a bang, taking a Davis feed and going behind the back for his third of the afternoon.
Edmonds and Frey scored once more in the third quarter before the Dutchmen added three more in the final frame, including the first of the year from junior Kerry Lyne

At the other end, senior Jack Santilli made 12 saves on 18 shots in 58:00 of action to earn the win, while junior Graham Goldheim played the final 2:00 of action. Santilli and juniors Josh Willis and Edward Winters led the defensive effort with five ground balls apiece, while sophomore Quinn Helmig caused a game-high four turnovers.

Union will return to action on Saturday, when the Dutchmen host Babson College in the team's 2019 home opener at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
