Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Harvard’s power play too much for Union

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
The nation's best power-play unit showed just how good it was in Union's 5-3 loss at Harvard on Friday night at the Bright-Landry Hockey center.

No. 17 Harvard (12-7-3, 9-5-2 ECACH), who entered the game with a .324 average on the man advantage, went a perfect 4-for-4 on the power play against No. 20 Union (13-9-5, 6-8-1 ECACH). Harvard's fifth and final goal was the only one not scored on the power play by the Crimson, but it was scored on an empty net in the final seconds of the contest as Union looked to tie the game back up.

Summary
  • Harvard's Adam Fox had a hand in four of his team's five goals.
  • Union never trailed by more than two, until the final empty-net goal was scored.
  • The Dutchmen held a 3-2 lead during the second period, but Harvard scored to tie the game up before the end of the period.
  • Anthony Rinaldi had a two-point outing, scoring Union's first goal and assisting on the team's third.
  • The Crimson out-shot Union 31-25, but Union had a 12-7 advantage in shots in the second period.
Statistical Comparison

How It Happened
Harvard's Lewis Zerter-Gossage opened the scoring at the 9:36 mark of the first period while on the power play. Union would respond later in the frame, as Anthony Rinaldi stole the puck at center ice and raced down the right wing, finishing off his sprint with a wrap-around goal for his ninth tally of the season.

Unfortunately, Harvard would score its second power-play goal of the night with just seven second remaining in the period to take back the lead.

In the second period, the Dutchmen began to push back and out-shot the Crimson 12-7 in the frame. Ryan Walker scored his ninth of the season just past the halfway mark of the second. Cole Maier won an offensive-zone face off and got the puck to Walker, who quickly one-timed it over the shoulder of Harvard netminder Michael Lackey.

The Dutchmen then took their first lead of the game just six minutes later. Brett Supinski created a turnover in the neutral zone and pushed the puck up to Rinaldi for a one-on-two with Sebastian Vidmar. Rinaldi tried to connect with Vidmar, but the pass went wide and end up high in the zone. Fortunately, Greg Campbell skated into the loose puck and let go a one timer that deflected off a Harvard defenseman and past Lackey for the 3-2 Union lead.

Harvard was given its third power play of the game with less than three minutes to play in the second. It didn't take long for the Crimson to capitalize, as they tied the game up, 3-3, at the 18-minute mark.

The Crimson then scored on their fourth and final power play of the evening, taking a 4-3 lead six minutes into the third period. Union was unable to get any offense going in the final frame, and with less than two minutes to play, opted for a sixth skater.

Harvard's Frederic Gregoire then scored on the open net to seal the Crimson's 5-3 victory with 47 seconds remaining.

Up Next for the Dutchmen
Union finishes off the weekend with a trip to Hanover, N.H., for a game against Dartmouth Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. (ET).
