SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior
M.K. McIntire scored a career-high three goals and 13 different players scored at least once to lead the Union College women's lacrosse team to a dominating 18-3 victory over Castleton University in the Dutchwomen's 2019 home opener on a beautiful Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
McIntire tied the game-high with a career-best four points, scoring three times with one assist. She was joined at four points by freshman
Grace Heiting, who scored once and added a game-high three helpers. Sophomore
Isabel Bush scored three times as well and senior
Hannah Rosenberger added two goals for Union (1-1).
It was a dominant performance for the Dutchwomen in their first home appearance of the season, outshooting the Spartans by a 34-5 margin and limiting the visitors to a 6-of-21 effort on clear attempts. Sophomore
Lindsay Gerrato also added a team-leading five draw controls as the home team controlled 15-of-23 draws.
Rosenberger got the scoring started just 57 seconds into the contest with an unassisted tally, kicking off a string of five straight goals that put Union 5-0 with 7:36 gone by in the period. Following Castleton's first of the game, the Dutchwomen responded with six goals coming from six different players, including the first career tally for junior
Mary Trop, to take an 11-1 lead. One more from each team put Union 12-2 after 30 minutes.
Union outshot Castleton 22-3 and forced 19 Spartan turnovers over the opening 30 minutes, while allowing the visitors only 3-of-13 successful clear attempts.
The Dutchwomen settled into the second half and retained their comfortable advantage, with six different players scoring over the final 30 minutes of action, including the first career score for sophomore
Ava Hultgren.
Junior
Ellie Taney earned the win in goal for Union despite not needing to make a save in 23:52 of action. Freshman
Jenna Paszek made one save in 27:23 of play before sophomore
Olivia Leong finished off the final 8:45 of the day.
Union will return to action next Friday, when the Dutchwomen begin Liberty League play against Rochester Institute of Technology at home beginning at 4 p.m.
