Women's Tennis Starts 2019 with a Sweep

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Union College women's tennis team kicked off the 2019 spring season on the right foot, sweeping Smith College 9-0 in a non-conference match at the Smith Indoor Track and Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Three players were dual winners for Union (2-2) on the day, as the sophomore trio of Megan Brown, Madelyn Gerardi and Cathy Xing all won in both singles and doubles play. In all, nine different players contributed to the team's nine victories,

The Dutchwomen started the day by dropping only three games in the three doubles victories. Senior Paige Webster and junior Tal Pezzuco started the day with an 8-0 win over Joanna Kim and Allison Ahern, while Brown and Xing followed soon after with another blanking of Kara Van Allen and Elsa Hillis at second doubles. Gerardi and junior Maddie Hamparian finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at third doubles over Betsy Hillier and Yena Li.

Union did not lose a set in six singles matches in completing the 9-0 win. Brown picked up the team's fourth win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ahern at first singles, before Xing clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-2 third-singles triumph over Van Allen.

Sophomore Samantha Siegel continued her solid first season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Joanna Kim at second singles, followed by senior Alex Greenberg with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at fourth singles over Li. Senior Sydney Robison picked up her first collegiate dual match victory with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) win over Hillis at fifth singles, while Gerardi completed a perfect day with her first dual match win, 7-5, 6-0 over Hiller at the sixth flight.

Union will return to Liberty League action next Saturday with a match at the Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 2 p.m.
