ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 contest to Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League matchup at the Midtown Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Tal Pezzuco had a pair of victories for Union (2-3, 1-3 Liberty League), while sophomore
Megan Brown also picked up a singles win as well for the visitors.
RIT (5-2, 1-1 Liberty League) took two of the three doubles matches to put the Dutchwomen behind early. Union's lone point came at first doubles, where the tandem of Pezzuco and senior
Paige Webster jumped out to a 6-3 lead but needed a tiebreaker before finally dispatching Anne Taylor and Kristen Zablonski, 8-7 (7-5).
Pezzuco and Brown both earned three-set victories to temporarily keep Union alive after losses at the third and fourth flights. Brown bounced back from a second-set loss to defeat Taylor in their second-singles matchup, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Pezzuco also dropped the second set and trailed for much of the third set of her first-singles match, but pulled even at 5-5 and eventually won in a tiebreaker, defeating Amelia Ying by a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) margin.
The Dutchwomen were unable to complete their comeback, however, dropping the fifth- and sixth-singles matches.
After taking some time off for finals, Union will head south to Hilton Head, S.C., for Spring Break, where the team will play four matches beginning on March 24 against the University of St. Thomas.
