SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior
Kerry Lyne scored a game-high four goals to lead the Union College men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 victory over Skidmore College in the Dutchmen's Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
Lyne led all players with four goals and five points for Union (5-1, 1-0 Liberty League), followed close behind by sophomore
Hayden Frey with two goals and two assists for four points. Senior
John Edmonds dished out a game-high three assists and sophomore
Aidan Flood had two goals as well for the visitors.
The Dutchmen dominated as the X, winning 17-of-23 draws. Senior
Alex Newhouse won 11 of his 14 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high eight ground balls, while junior
Patrick Regan won 4-of-6 draws and sophomore
Cory Sachs won 2-of-3 faceoffs.
Union outshot Skidmore by a 58-27 margin on the afternoon, allowing the Thoroughbreds no more than nine shots in any quarter. Tim Rahill made 17 saves to limit the damage of the UC onslaught, while senior
Jack Santilli turned aside 12 of 16 on-target attempts in 56:57 of action.
Skidmore scored twice after Lyne opening the scoring to take a 2-1 lead after one quarter, but Union responded well by outscoring the home team 6-1 in the second quarter to take control. Lyne had three of the six Union tallies in the quarter and also assisted on the go-ahead goal by junior
Josh Willis that put the visitors ahead for good.
Union continued the offensive attack in the second half, outscoring Skidmore 7-2 over the final 30 minutes to secure the victory. Flood scored a pair of goals and junior
Michael Sands recorded a pair of assists in the second half.
