SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team dropped its first Liberty League contest of the season, falling to IWLCA #17 William Smith College by a 15-5 margin on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Sophomore
Lindsay Gerrato was a bright spot on the day for Union (2-2, 1-1 Liberty League), scoring four of the team's five goals. Junior
Mallory Toolan also found the net while sophomore
Isabel Bush added a pair of assists for the home team as well.
William Smith (6-2, 4-0 Liberty League) got on the board first just 54 seconds into the game, but the Dutchwomen settled in defensively and kept the Herons without a shot for the next seven minutes, while nearly tying the game when senior
Hannah Rosenberger rang a shot off the crossbar. Gerrato's first of the game with 16:52 remaining in the half put the home team in good shape down just 2-1.
However, William Smith's Anna Murphy scored exactly three minutes after Gerrato and started a string of seven straight Heron goals to end the opening half, as the visitors took a 9-1 lead into the locker rooms.
Union continued to battle in the second half, outshooting William Smith by an 11-8 margin while controlling eight of the 10 draws and forcing 13 Herons turnovers. However, the home team was still outscored 6-4 over the final 30 minutes.
For the game, William Smith held a 25-19 edge in shots. Junior
Ellie Taney suffered the loss, allowing six goals on nine shots in 24:54 of action, while freshman
Jenna Paszek allowed nine goals on 11 attempts the rest of the way.
Union will look to bounce back on Monday with a non-conference matchup at SUNY Oneonta beginning at 5 p.m.
