HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Union College women's tennis team fought hard but ultimately came up short to the University of St. Thomas in the team's Spring Break opener on Sunday afternoon, falling by a 7-2 score at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club.
Union (2-4) fell behind early in doubles play, as the team dropped all three matches. Senior
Alex Greenberg and sophomore
Samantha Siegel had the closest match in their third-doubles contest against Natasha Hood and Catherine Lindsay, falling 8-4.
The Dutchwomen had several excellent performances in singles play, earning a pair of comeback victories and nearly nabbing a third.
Sophomore
Megan Brown earned the team's first point with a big comeback at second singles, taking the second set 6-3 and then capturing the supertiebreaker 10-8 to pull out the win. Junior
Tal Pezzuco also came back from a set down to win, outlasting Taylor McLeod 16-14 in a supertiebreaker after splitting the first two sets, 1-6, 6-4.
Senior
Paige Webster nearly followed the same script, forcing a supertiebreaker after losing the first set but ultimately coming just short in a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) defeat to Hood at third singles.
Union has a busy day ahead of it tomorrow with two matches on the slate. The Dutchwomen take on Carleton College at 8:30 a.m. and come back later in the day to take on DePauw University beginning at 5 p.m.
