AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Union College baseball team used a late rally to defeat St. Olaf, 11-8, in the first game of a doubleheader against the Oles on Monday afternoon. Despite the big offensive output in the first game, the second game featured more defense as St. Olaf came back to claim a 4-3 win over the Dutchmen.
With the split to St. Olaf, and the split against DePauw on Sunday, Union is now 2-2 to begin the 2019 season. The Oles leave the series with the Dutchmen with an 8-3 record.
In game one, both
Jack Koch and
Colin Kelly went a perfect 4-for-4 in the contest. Koch scored four runs as the lead-off hitter for the Dutchmen, and Kelly scored two runs himself and added three RBI's. Sophomore
Elias Kuhns also hit his first collegiate home run, hitting a two-run bomb in the fifth inning which put Union up 8-5 at the time.
Despite holding a three-run lead after five innings, St. Olaf managed to tie the game up with three runs in the sixth inning. However, Union responded with a huge outing in the bottom of the six, as an RBI single from
J.R. Lopez and a triple from Kelly put Union back on top before Kelly scored the final run of the game thanks to a wild pitch.
In the nightcap, St. Olaf added single runs in the second and third innings to take the 2-0 lead. The Dutchmen got on the board in the fourth after a
Joe Ganim single allowed
Sean Cullen to score. Unfortunately, the Oles would add two more runs before the seventh inning, and despite the Dutchmen scoring twice in the top of the seventh, it wouldn't be enough as St. Olaf would take the game, 4-3.
Union returns to the field tomorrow in Auburndale, Fla., for a doubleheader against Colby College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (ET).
