CLERMONT, Fla. – The Union College softball team got only one game in on Wednesday due to rain, dropping a tough 6-5 contest to Middlebury College on day four of the Spring Games at Legends Way Fields.
Senior
Dana Dolinko led Union (1-6) with two hits on the day and scored once, while sophomore
Makayla Koehler scored twice and freshman
Julia Boule drove in a team-high two runs at the plate.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring in the top of the first, scratching across an unearned run after Koehler scored following an errant throw on a grounder by senior
Kim Puzo.
After the Panthers took back the lead, Union responded with three runs in the top of the third to regain the lead. Following back-to-back singles by Dolinko and sophomore
Stuart Buxton, Koehler drove home a run with an infield grounder and Boule followed with a clutch two-out, two-run base hit to put the Dutchwomen up 4-2.
Union led 5-2 entering the bottom of the sixth following an RBI double by freshman
Julissa Malana, but Middlebury rallied with two runs in each of the final two frames. The Dutchwomen took a 5-4 lead into the seventh thanks in part to throwing a pair of runners out at home plate in the sixth, which limited the damage to just two runs. The team was then just one out away from victory in the seventh, but three straight singles with two outs plated a pair of runs for the Panthers.
Koehler (0-2) suffered the loss for Union, allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Union's other scheduled game of the day against Kalamazoo College was moved back from the morning to the afternoon due to rain, but was eventually canceled.
The Dutchwomen will be back in action on Thursday for their final day of the Spring Games, taking on Colby College and Luther College.
