CLERMONT, Fla. – The Union College softball team defeated Colby, 14-6, in six innings and lost to Luther, 9-0 in five, Thursday.
Game One: Union 14, Colby 6 (6 inn.)
First-year infielder
Julissa Malana went 4-4 from the plate, including three doubles and an RBI to lead Union to a 14-6 victory in six innings over Colby. Sophomore pitcher
Catie Raeter was credited with the win, taking her record this season to 2-1.
Colby jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, and added a fifth run in the top of the third to extend their edge. However, Union responded with five runs in the bottom of the third to tie the score. First-year
Julia Boule drove in Malana to get the Dutchwomen off the mark. Sophomore
Stuart Buxton reached home on a wild pitch shortly after, then senior
Kim Puzo and sophomore
Makayla Koehler each drove in a run to bring Union within a run. Malana capped off the inning with an RBI single to score junior
Bailey Kross and tie the game, 5-5.
Koehler gave the Dutchwomen their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when her sac fly drove in senior
Dana Dolinko from third base. Kross then singled to left field and Puzo crossed home plate from second base.
Union kept up the offensive attack with five more runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run single by Koehler and a Kross fly ball that plated two more runs. The Dutchwomen put the game away early in the sixth following a Boule RBI single and a Colby error that allowed Dolinko to score the team's 14th and final run.
Raeter pitched well in relief for Union, allowing only one run on four hits in 3.1 innings. Dolinko started the game and was victim of some back luck, with four of her five runs allowed coming unearned.
Game Two: Luther 9, Union 0 (5 inn.)
The Dutchwomen managed only one hit in the second game of the day against a very strong Luther team, which came away with a 9-0 victory after five innings.
After a two-run first inning, Luther used a four run second inning to take a 6-0 lead that proved the difference. The lone hit of the game for the Dutchwomen came when Raeter singled with one out in the fifth.
Koehler (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in two innings of work.
Union is scheduled to play a doubleheader against SUNY Canton on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Alexander Field.
