Second-Half Struggles Haunt Women's Lacrosse

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team hung with IWLCA #19 Ithaca College for the opening 30 minutes, but the Bombers surged past the Dutchwomen in the second half to deal Union a 15-7 defeat in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Senior Hannah Rosenberger led Union (3-3, 1-2 Liberty League) with three points on two goals and an assist, while classmate Emma Lowrey added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Lindsay Gerrato added a game-high eight draw controls and junior Bri Stout added a team-best four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Dutchwomen hung with Ithaca (6-3, 3-0 Liberty League) over the opening 30 minutes, trailing only 7-6 at the half. Ithaca scored three in a row to take a 7-4 lead with 6:59 remaining, but a goal 60 seconds later from senior Julia Pfohl and a nice pass from junior Mallory Toolan set up Lowrey for a score that decreased the deficit to one at the break.

Union stayed in the game partially due to a dominance on the draws, as the home team controlled 11-of-14 draws. Gerrato had seven draw controls herself to lead the attack.

The second half was a different story, however, as the visitors scored on eight of their 15 shots to assume control of the game. Ithaca finished with a 31-17 edge in shots, as junior Ellie Taney made 12 saves to keep her team in the game.

Union will return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Stevens Institute of Technology beginning at 6 p.m.
