SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team battled hard against regionally ranked Hamilton College before falling by a 6-3 score on Thursday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.
Sophomore
Austin Egna was a double winner for Union (5-5), while freshman
Cameron Klepper also picked up a singles victory against Hamilton (9-1), which entered the day ranked 17th in the Northeast Region according to the Oracle/ITA Div. III Men's Rankings.
The Dutchmen were very competitive in the doubles matches to start the day, posting one win and nearly sweeping all three. Egna and brother
Max Egna earned the first point of the day, picking up an 8-6 win at first doubles over Sam Farber and Rob Dotterer. Klepper and classmate
Nick Weitzman held a late lead in their third-doubles match before succumbing in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-1), while junior
David Bond and freshman
Ioannis Binopoulos also fought hard in an 8-6 loss at second doubles.
Union stayed alive thanks to a pair of singles wins, as Egna knocked off Jafar Sharipov, 6-4, 6-1 at fifth singles and Klepper bested Tim Derby by a 7-5, 6-4 score to put the score at 4-3 in favor of the Continentals. Binopoulos and
Max Egna both took their matches to three sets in the hopes of completing a big comeback, but the Dutchmen came up just short in both contests to suffer the loss.
Union will continue its very busy stretch tomorrow with a non-conference match at SUNY Oneonta beginning at 4 p.m.
