Puzo's Walk-off HR Secures Sweep Over RIT

SCHENECTADY. N.Y. – The Union College softball team came away with a pair of victories against Liberty League foe RIT, 8-4 in game one, and 7-6 in game two, Saturday at Alexander Field.

Game One: Union 8, RIT 4

The Dutchwomen used a seven-run fifth inning to earn a 8-4 win. On the circle, sophomore Catie Raeter improved to 5-1 on the season, pitching a shutout after entering the game in the fourth inning.

Union broke the deadlock with one out in the third inning when first-year Julia Boule batted in classmate Julisssa Malana from third. The Tigers took their first lead of the afternoon after scoring four runs in the fourth.

Senior Dana Dolinko singled to left center to plate Malana for the second Dutchowman run. Junior Kim Puzo drove in Dolinko and sophomore Stuart Buxton to tie the game, and senior Kelsey Hartsoe batted in Boule to give Union a 5-4 advantage that proved insurmountable. Raeter drove in Puzo with the next at bat with her single to center field. Buxton capped off the scoring after Hartsoe and Raeter scored following an error to secure the win.

Game Two: Union 7, RIT 6

A Puzo three-run walk-off home run to left field capped a five-run seventh inning as Union won their fifth consecutive game in dramatic fashion. Dolinko and Puzo each had a pair of hits, while Raeter earned her second win of the day and sixth of the season on the hill.

Trailing 1-0 in the first, a Boule groundout allowed Dolinko to score from third to tie the game. The Tigers added three runs in the fifth to lead 4-1 heading into the sixth inning. Junior Bailey Kross brought the Dutchwomen within two with an RBI double to right center.

RIT added two runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-2. With the bases loaded, Boule hit an 2 RBI double following an error by the Tiger right fielder that drove in Buxton and Malana. The next batter, Puzo, launched a three-run shot over the fence in left field to win the game for Union.

The Dutchwomen return to action Sunday, April 14, traveling to Ithaca to face the Bombers at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
