AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- The Union College baseball team split a doubleheader with Vassar, losing 1-0 in the first game before rebounding for a dominant 12-3 win in the second game, on Friday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.
Union is now 13-11 on the season with a 9-5 mark in conference play while Vassar moves to 12-19 (6-12 Liberty League).
Despite the loss in game one, the lone run giving up to Vassar was unearned, as the Brewers used one hit and one error in the top of the seventh for the only scoring of the contest.
Colin Nye ended the complete game with just the one unearned run against, but struck out seven Brewers in the process.
After the quick pitcher's duel to start off the day, game two saw a combined 26 hits, with the Dutchmen claiming 19.
Sean Cullen led the way for the Dutchmen in the nightcap, going 5-for-5 with five runs scored and two RBI's. Fiver other batters had two hits in the contest, and
Andy Labeck was second on the team with three hits.Â
Labeck got things started for Union in the first inning of the second game, using a double to score Cullen for the early lead. Vassar then responded in the second with a two-RBI double to claim a 2-1 lead. The Dutchmen then scored runs in both the second and third innings to take back the lead, thanks to a double from
Will Bellamy and a solo home run by Cullen. The Brewers would then tie the game up, 3-3, with a home run in the top of the fourth inning, but Union would go on to dominate the remainder of the game, scoring nine straight runs for the 12-3 win. Union's biggest innings of the game came in the fourth and eighth, as the Dutchmen score three runs in each of those frames. On the mound,
Tommy Scherrer picked up the win, throwing 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball.Â
Due to forecasted rains in Poughkeepsie, tomorrow's doubleheader with Vassar will be played back at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
