SCHENECTADY, N.Y – The Union College men's tennis team remained in the hunt for a postseason berth with a crucial 6-3 victory over St. Lawrence University on Senior Day on Friday afternoon at the Sportime Tennis Club.
With the win, Union (6-7, 3-4 Liberty League) moves into a tie for sixth place in the conference with St. Lawrence (7-7, 3-4 Liberty League), but the Dutchmen now hold the head-to-head tiebreaker in the race for the final postseason spot. Union can clinch its first postseason berth since 2014 either with a win over #17 Skidmore College or a St. Lawrence loss to #35 Hobart College on Sunday.
Two freshmen led the way for Union on Senior Day, as
Ioannis Binopoulos and
Cameron Klepper played a role in four of the Dutchmen's six victories, earning wins in both singles and doubles play. Senior
Zach Kaplan also picked up a singles win in his final collegiate home match.
The Dutchmen started the afternoon well by taking two of the three doubles matches to grab an early lead. St. Lawrence earned the first point of the day, but the freshman tandem of Klepper and
Nick Weitzman evened the match with an 8-3 win at third doubles before Binopoulos and junior
David Bond put Union ahead with an 8-5 first-doubles victory.
Junior
Del Schunk quickly put another point on the board for Union with a clinical 6-0, 6-0 win over Spencer Whitmire at third singles, followed by a 6-4, 6-3 victory for Klepper at second singles over Nico Haet.
Binopoulos clinched the victory for the home team with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at first singles over Leo Romanetz while Kaplan finished things off in his final home match by defeating Quinn Bermingham, 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles.
Union will close out the regular season on Sunday against ITA #17 Skidmore beginning at 1 p.m. in Saratoga Springs.
