SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team dropped its regular-season finale to #17 Skidmore College by a 9-0 score on Sunday, but the team still had a good day as the Dutchmen will be advancing to the Liberty League Tournament for the first time since 2014.
The loss keeps Union (6-8, 3-5 Liberty League) in a sixth-place tie in the conference standings with St. Lawrence University, but the Dutchmen earned the tiebreaker thanks to their 7-2 win over the Saints on Friday.
Union battled hard against the nationally ranked Thoroughbreds (13-5, 8-0 Liberty League), but were unable to earn a point on the day.
Junior David Bond and freshman Ioannis Binopoulos nearly came up with a point at first doubles, falling by an 8-6 score to JT Wynne and Noah Williamson. Freshmen Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman also put up a good fight at third doubles, dropping an 8-5 match against Jack McLaren and Jason Keye.
Binopoulos also nearly took the first set in his first singles match, dropping a tiebreaker before eventually succumbing in straight sets to Wynne, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
